Your 2020 Oral Care Resolutions

Your 2020 Oral Care Resolutions
We’re getting to that time of year again where it’s time to consider our 2020 New Year Resolutions. Health goals are some of the most popular goals to set—yet, it can be incredibly difficult to form the habits needed to stick with healthy goals.

As you consider your health and wellness goals, our local Billings, MT, dentists are here to help you set effective oral health care goals. That way, during your next cleaning, you can confidently tell us all about your brushing and flossing habits—no fibbing needed.

Brush Teeth Twice A Day

Brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes is one of the simplest and best daily things you can do for your oral health. But sometimes, life gets in the way. Whether you forget while rushing out the door in the morning or collapse into your bed before you brush, it can be easy to forget.

Some ways you can help yourself reach your goal of twice-daily brushing is:

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush gently so that you don’t damage the enamel of your teeth or irritate your sensitive gums.
  • Set a timer to ensure that you get the full two minutes of toothbrushing.
  • Try out an electric toothbrush. Some electric toothbrushes have a built-in timer that helps you know how long to brush and when to move your brush.
  • Keep a note on your mirror to help remind you to brush.

Floss At Least Once A Day

Flossing is great for your teeth, as it can get into those crevices that your toothbrush has a hard time reaching. However, many people run into the same trouble with flossing that they do with brushing their teeth. Some things you can try to help you keep your 2020 flossing resolution are:

  • Carry flossing picks—pre-strung with floss—to help you remember to floss even if you are busy.
  • Invest in an oral irrigator, which uses a pressurized stream of water to help floss between your teeth. Some people find these water flossers more convenient and easier to use than traditional flossing, helping them to stick to their flossing habits.
  • Put a reminder note on your mirror under the note about brushing your teeth!

Cut Down On Acid And Sugar

The top enemies of your oral health are acid and sugar. Acid is corrosive and wears down the protective enamel of your teeth, exposing the sensitive dentin below. As for sugar, it attracts harmful oral bacteria, which eats the leftover sugar and excretes acid onto your teeth.

So, to better protect your oral health, one of your 2020 oral health care resolutions may be to cut down on foods and drinks that have significant amounts of acid and sugar. Some of the worst foods and drinks for your teeth are:

  • Sticky and/or sour candies
  • Citrus
  • Soda
  • Dried fruit
  • Chips
  • Alcohol

Go In For Biannual Cleanings

One of the dental services we offer at Castle Rock Dental is biannual preventative dental cleanings. During these cleanings, our dental hygienists will take x-rays of your teeth and remove any built-up calcium and plaque as they clean your teeth.

By sticking to a regular biannual cleaning schedule, you will be able to have any oral health issues identified and caught in their early stages. Not only will that be less pain for you, but it is also cheaper in the long run.

Tackle That Tooth Pain

It can be tempting to ignore things like nagging toothache and other oral issues. However, the longer you wait, the worse the condition can become.

For instance, say that you have some sensitivity in one of your back molars, and it hurts sometimes when you bite down. It might be just a simple cavity. But, if you ignore it, that allows the cavity to develop, it can end up infecting the pulp of your tooth, leading to a root canal and crown or the loss of the tooth altogether.

Rather than delaying your needed oral care, commit this year to visit us, and finally, find out why you are having oral pain.
