Traditional Dentures vs. Implant Dentures, What’s The Difference?

A question our dentists at Castle Rock Dental are often asked is what the difference between traditional dentures and implant dentures. Most people ask this because they are looking for the best option to replace their teeth.

There is a variety of difference between the two types of dentures. To help you understand the differences, we will clarify what these dental devices do then compare and contrast them. That way, you can make an informed decision on which style of dentures is best for you.

What Are Traditional And Implant Dentures

A traditional set of dentures are likely the ones you are most familiar with as they have been around in some form or another for centuries. But, unlike George Washington’s wooden dentures, modern dentures are made up of dental resin (teeth), metal framework (base where teeth are mounted), and plastic (covers metal framework). These dentures are removable and need to be taken out nightly for cleaning.

Implanted dentures are often made of acrylic, as the material is highly durable. The acrylic can bond securely to the denture base, which is often acrylic as well and also reinforced with a metal framework supporting the structure. The dentures are rooted with titanium posts, which are surgically implanted by one of our dentists. These dentures are fixed in place and never need to be removed.
