Yes, eating with dentures takes some getting used to — but it’s a small price to pay for having a full set of functional and beautiful teeth right? A survey conducted by Wakefield Research revealed that denture wearers avoid certain foods and activities. 1 in 3 denture wearers admitted they sometimes skipped eating out in public because they were self conscious about their dentures. And 77 percent of those surveyed said they dealt with issues including food getting under their dentures while eating, gum irritation, pain while eating and bad breath.

But guess what? You don’t have to be one of those statistics. With some practice and these tips you will know what to eat and how to eat it in a way that minimizes any embarrassing situations.

1. START SLOW

In the days and weeks after you receive dentures or a dental implant, you need to eat as if you’ve just had a surgery, because you have had one — a dental surgery. Reach for soft foods that go down easy. Your mouth will probably already be sore so don’t make it worse with what you eat.

2. AVOID THESE AGITATORS

  • COFFEE, TEA: These foods should be avoided, but not for the reasons you might think. These beverages can stain natural teeth, but when it comes to dentures the bigger issue is the dehydration they can cause. Because denture-wearers are prone to dry mouth, further dehydrating yourself is no-no. Reach for water instead.
  • POPCORN: While delicious, popcorn can wreak havoc on your dentures. The kernels are extremely hard and can easily stuck between your teeth.
  • NUTS: Just like popcorn, this snack is full of sharp edges and little bits that can get stuck in your dentures.
  • HOT DRINKS: Dentures are much less sensitive to hot and cold than natural teeth. Which means you might take a big sip of hot cocoa and not feel anything until it scalds the roof of your mouth.
  • PEANUT BUTTER: It’s simple, if you eat a spoonful of peanut butter, it’s going to end up all over your teeth. Prevention names this one of the worst foods for dentures. If you just have to have it, plan on brushing your dentures immediately after.
  • CORN ON THE COB: Chomping into corn on the cob is risky business. The good news is that it still tastes just as good when you cut the corn off of the cob first.
  • GUM, TAFFY, CARAMEL: These will stick to your teeth like there is no tomorrow. Avoid at all costs! If you have enough self control, you can eat these by sucking on them rather than chewing.

3. PICK PROTEIN WISELY

When it comes to meats, things like ground beef, ground turkey and pulled pork or turkey will be enjoyable and easy to eat while a seared steak or beef jerky will be much harder to chew with dentures.

4. GO SEEDLESS

When you have the choice between seeded or seedless, like grapes for example, always opt for seedless. Same great taste without any little bits and pieces finding their way into crevices.

5. PREPARE WITH CARE

Just because you have dentures doesn’t mean you can never enjoy these foods again, you will just have to prepare them differently and eat them less often. For example, if you are fruit lover, whip up a smoothie. Where’s the beef? Opt for a beef stew over steak. If you want to eat carrots, saute them until soft rather than chomping into a raw carrot with your front two teeth. (Besides, doing that makes your look like Bugs Bunny). Here are a few other handy dandy tips.

  • When possible cut your food into small bite-size pieces to minimize the amount of chewing you have to do.
  • Try to chew with both sides of your mouth and chew slowly.
  • Ask your dentist about using a denture adhesive to help keep your teeth in place while eating.
